Keeping in view the isolation of the inhabited islands, difficult terrain and communication bottlenecks, all PHCs in the islands are provided with 10 beds and CHCs 40-70 beds with laboratory, X-ray machine and blood transfusion facilities for better investigation. Besides these, captive power generator sets, ambulances, refrigerators and deep freezers for maintaining cold chain have also been provided in the PHCs/CHCs and are managed by Doctors, Staff Nurses and Para-Medical Staff as per the norms prescribed by the Government of India.


Rural Health Services
Primary Health Care Services are provided to the rural community through the network of Sub-Centre, PHCs and CHCs which is based on the following population norms of the Govt. of lndia.
The Telemedicine/Tele-consultancy Services
Under the leadership of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the much-awaited Telemedicine Project was launched on 3rd July 2002. The Telemedicine facility will enable the patient to directly interact with the Super Specialists in New Delhi without going to mainland thereby saving time, energy and money. The facility is already extended to District Hospital Car Nicobar, and it is plan to cover other CHCs and PHCs in a phased manner.
ISM & Homoeopathy
Under the ISM & Homoeopathy Unit, the Homoeo Dispensaries are planned to cover Car Nicobar in a phased manner.
National TB Control Programme
Under this programme, one District TB Centre with trained key personnel for planning, implementation, monitoring and supervision of the programme, a 12-bedded ward at Car Nicobar and 5 bedded Ward at Nancowry are also functioning in the territory. The incidence of Malaria also fluctuates due to seasonal variations. To control Dengue Municipal Council focuses to maintain high standard sanitation.
National Leprosy Eradication Programme
Under National Leprosy Eradication Programme, 3 Urban Leprosy Centres and one 20 bedded Temporary Hospitalization Ward at Bambooflat are functioning. The sudden increase in number of new cases is a result of Modified Leprosy Elimination Campaign (MLEC). During MLEC, a rapid door to door survey was conducted to detect hidden cases of Leprosy in the community.
National AIDS Control Programme
As part of AIDS Control Programme, one District level Blood Bank at Civil Hospital Car Nicobar has already been established in the year 2000 with the help of NACO. As per approved protocol, Sentinel Surveillance has been carried out at Antenatal and STD Clinics set up at the CHC, Rangat and the Civil Hospital, Car Nicobar.
The Society is extending periodical training to the doctors and para-medical workers for the prevention and control of HIV-AlDS, Syndromic Management of STDs, Health Awareness Campaign and also conducting voluntary blood donation camps.
